When Maxwell thought back on the incident involving alcohol, he revealed that it had a greater impact on his family than on himself.

I Say Mourner’s Kaddish on the Day of the Dead

I don’t think it matters that the people I have loved and lost weren’t Jewish because I am a Mexican convert. That I can still remember them matters. The Mourner’s Kaddish is a prayer that I particularly like. I believe there is a certain beauty in a prayer specifically for grief. The prayer itself is even more lovely; rather than being a lament, it is a statement of gratitude for God’s kindness and holiness.

However, I never offer the Mourner’s Kaddish while in service. It’s not that I don’t have anyone to grieve for; rather, it’s because the people I lost were not Jewish. I have no Jewish relatives who would be familiar with or understand the Mourner’s Kaddish because I am a convert. I contemplated saying the Mi Sheberach in prayer for my uncle while he was in the hospital. Would he want my prayer, a Catholic? How could he care? Could God?I first became aware of the little table in my great aunt’s living room when I was in elementary school. The house was decked out for Halloween, but there was a tiny table with skulls and images in a living room corner.

She clarified, “It’s an altar for Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead.”

Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday observed to pay tribute to and mourn departed family members. After Disney released the film “Coco” a few years ago, the holiday and custom gained further traction. Today, Day of the Dead decorations coexist with Halloween ones at Target and other places.

This day’s history has its roots in Catholicism. These days, Halloween is a largely secular event in the United States.
“If I were a non-Jew, could I say Kaddish?” So I did.

All Souls Day and the Day of the Dead

Autumn was a time for pagan festivals of the dead in ancient Europe, which included eating, dancing, and bonfires. Some of these traditions persisted even after the Roman Catholic Church gained popularity and (unofficially) incorporated them into the celebrations of All Saints Day and All Souls Day, which are observed on the first two days of November.

On All Souls Day, people in medieval Spain would light candles and cover graves with flowers to help the deceased spirits find their way back to their Earthly homes. They would also bring wine and pan de ánimas, or spirit bread, to the graves of their loved ones. These customs were carried to the New World by Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth century, along with a pessimistic outlook on mortality that was shaped by the devastating effects of the bubonic plague.

How Do People Celebrate the Day of the Dead?
Contrary to popular belief, El Día de los Muertos is not a Mexican counterpart of Halloween, even though there are similarities between the two celebrations in terms of parades and costumes. It is thought that the boundary separating the physical world from the spirit realm dissolves on the Day of the Dead. The afterlife awakens for a little time, and the deceased come back to life to feast, drink, dance, and sing with their loved ones. At their gravesites or on the ofrendas they have made in their houses, the surviving family members treat the deceased as honoured guests and include their favourite foods and other offerings in their celebrations. Along with food, ofrendas can be adorned with candles, vivid marigolds known as cempasuchil, and red cock’s combs.

The most well-known Day of the Dead symbols are calaveras, or skulls, and calacas, or skeletons.
